Beginning in the freshman year, students are advised of college admission requirements. The importance of grades, course selection and extracurricular activities are explained. This is reiterated at the sophomore level. Students are urged to repeat courses completed with a “D” grade. For colleges and universities, a “D” in a Course = failure!! While a “D” is a passing grade, a “C-” or better is needed to meet college requirements.
All juniors take the PSAT/NMSQT test in October. If a junior is interested in applying to a four year university, they are advised to take the ACT Assessment plus Writing and the SAT I test in the spring semester of their junior year.
All seniors should register for the ACT Assessment plus Writing or SAT I Test administered in October. The American College Test (ACT) Assessment Plus Writing Test is given in September, October, December, February, April, and June. College Board Tests (SAT I Reasoning with Writing and the SAT II) are given in October, November, December, January, March (SAT I only), May, and June. All college applicants must have a Social Security number .Students are invited to visit college campuses and to attend informational sessions conducted by college representatives at Saint Elizabeth. The college counselor provides information about college fairs and preview days. Seniors should have their list of interested colleges narrowed down to their top five choices by October of their senior year.
In January, a meeting is held on the issue of financial aid. Parents are invited to attend this workshop on filing FAFSA, the federal financial form. Parents are also encouraged to individually contact the college admission counselor. The counselor writes a monthly column in the school newsletter, apprizing parents of deadlines, requirements, college visits, and college fairs.
The college counselor routinely generates a scholarship summary list, indicating the eligibility requirements, amount of award, deadline date, and procedure.
In early March, there is an evening college planning meeting for the parents of all juniors in order to go over high school college preparatory requirements and course selection. The college counseling office is equipped with UC and CSU current college applications and has access on line to almost every college application, financial aid forms and instruction booklets, college view books and catalogues, scholarship applications, a computer with a college and scholarship search program, test applications and corresponding practice booklets, test preparation guides, and college review guides.
The college counselor arranges community college placement testing for students interested in attending the local community colleges in the district and schedules testing appointments on the campus site for those students interested in attending junior colleges outside the district.
The college counselor also complies a list of academic and enrichment program opportunities.
The college counselor communicates with the college bound student by way of morning announcements and routine visits to the classroom.
The Personal Statement
The purpose of the personal statement is to give the student an opportunity to tell the admission office (or a scholarship committee) about aspects of their background which may not be apparent from other parts of the application. Colleges and universities which require personal statements consider personal attributes as well as academic record in evaluation a candidate’s admissibility. There is no single “good” personal statement. Admission officers look for essays in which the quality of a student’s character emerges. They are interested not only in what the student has done but also why the student has chosen particular undertakings. Read carefully the instructions regarding the personal statement in the application packet. Follow the directions with regard to length, topic, color of ink, and form. The personal statement should be typed or neatly written in ink.
The student should write his/her own statement, but it is advisable to have a friend, teacher, parents or the college counselor proofread it.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA ENTRANCE REQUIREMENT
All University of California campuses have a November 30 postmark deadline for application submission.
The Scholarship Requirement defines the grade point average you must attain in the a-g subjects and the ACT or SAT I test scores that you must earn to be eligible for admission to the University. To satisfy the minimum Scholarship requirement, you must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or above and achieve the test score total indicated in the UC Eligibility Index.
To satisfy this admission requirement, an applicant must submit scores from standardized tests. Students applying for admission to the fall term must complete tests by December of their senior year, but preferably before November. The student is responsible for having the testing services send test scores to each school of application.
CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE REQUIREMENT
Many California State Universities also have a November 30 postmark deadline for application submission.
All Students must take either ACT Assessment Plus Writing Test or the SAT I with Writing for CSU admission.
If a student has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above, no minimum test score is required, however, all applicants must take the ACT Assessment Plus Writing test or the SAT I Reasoning test with Writing at least once. If a student’s GPA falls between a 2.00 and 3.00, she or he is required to obtain a minimum ACT Assessment Plus Writing Test score or the SAT I with Writing Test score.
INDEPENDENT COLLEGE ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
Many independent colleges require or recommend four (4) years of English, three (3) years of math, two (2) years of science and the study of a foreign language. It is essential that a student determine the specific requirements of the college of his/her choice. Results of the ACT Assessment Pus Writing Test or the SAT I Reasoning Tests with Writing are required for most private and out-of-state colleges and universities. It is recommended that the test be taken no later than October of the senior year for fall entrance. Many private universities have a November 30 deadline for application submission. It is best to conference with the college counselor in order to check on private universities’ application deadlines.

How to Apply
While application processes vary at each independent college, the following guidelines should help:
∙ Write for applications in the summer prior to your senior year.
∙ Check the deadlines carefully.
∙ Request the appropriate papers: test scores, transcripts, recommendations, etc.
. Check the college’s web page to download a copy of their admission application or access the college application online through the school’s web site and submit it electronically.
When do you Find Out?
The usual notification methods are:
April: The highly selective colleges usually notify candidates in mid-April and ask for a reply (and some even ask for a deposit) by May 1. The University of California usually will notify students the month of March. Please note that all admissions are conditional upon earning at least C or above grades in the final semester of your senior year.
Rolling Admissions: Most California State Universities have a rolling admission’s notification if the student is eligible for CSU admission. Exceptions are Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, Chico, Long Beach and San Diego State. Applicants to these schools will receive notification during the month of March. Please note that all admissions are conditional upon earning at least C or above grades in the final semester of your senior year.
COMMUNITY COLLEGE ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
Graduation from high school or age 18. Students must complete English and Mathematics Placement Examinations.
A. Associate in Arts covers two years of college work. Students may transfer to a four-year college as juniors.
B. Certificate programs in business and/or vocational/trade programs
